Tangem is a seedless NFC card wallet launched in 2018, with more than 8 million cards sold. It uses an EAL6+ certified secure element, needs no screen or battery, and has been independently audited by Kudelski, Riscure and Cure53. Its firmware can never be patched — a strength against remote attacks, but the reason a 2026 laser fault-injection disclosure and a 2025 logging bug can't simply be fixed on cards already in the wild.

Trezor is the original hardware wallet, launched in 2014, with entirely open-source firmware and companion app that anyone can independently review. The current Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7 models all ship with a certified EAL6+ Secure Element — hardware protection its earliest models lacked — starting at $59 for the Safe 3. It supports Shamir/Multi-share Backup to split a recovery seed across multiple physical shares. An August 2026 breach at a fulfilment partner is a recent negative worth knowing about, though Trezor says no wallets or devices were compromised.

Tangem is built specifically for beginners: tap a card and you're done in about 3 minutes, no seed phrase involved. Trezor requires writing down and safely storing a recovery seed during setup — a bit more friction, but a well-documented, widely understood process.

Which is more transparent?

Trezor is fully open-source across firmware and app, independently reviewable by anyone on GitHub. Tangem's firmware is closed and permanently unpatchable by design, which is intentional — it also means Tangem can never push a firmware update, for better or worse.

Which is cheaper?

Tangem's 2-card set starts at $54.90, slightly below Trezor's entry-level Safe 3 at $59. Both are among the more affordable certified-secure-element wallets available.

What happened with Trezor's August 2026 breach?

A fulfilment partner Trezor uses was breached in August 2026. Trezor has stated that no wallets or devices themselves were compromised as a result, but it's a recent incident worth factoring into your decision.

Can I lose access permanently with either wallet?

Yes, in different ways. Lose every Tangem card without a separately configured backup and the funds are gone forever, since access-code recovery isn't possible after setup. Trezor wallets can be restored on a new device from the recovery seed (or Shamir shares) if that backup is safely stored.
