Tangem review: the credit-card-sized wallet with no screen, no battery, no seed phrase

Independent publication≈ 10 min read

Tangem swaps the usual hardware-wallet formula — screen, buttons and a default seed phrase — for tap-to-sign NFC cards backed by an EAL6+ secure element. The design is unusually simple to onboard. We also cover the December 2024 logging issue and Ledger Donjon's 2026 laser fault-injection disclosure so you can judge the trade-offs clearly.

Our concise assessment

Tangem is one of the fastest, most beginner-friendly ways to move into cold storage: tap a card and there is no seed phrase to write down by default. That simplicity comes with real trade-offs: there is no device screen for independent transaction verification, and the locked firmware means existing cards cannot receive a firmware fix for the 2026 lab-grade fault-injection issue.

Where it stands out

  • No seed phrase to write down by default; onboarding in about 3 minutes.
  • EAL6+ certified secure element, the same class used in passport and payment chips
  • Slim, durable IP69K card form factor with a 25-year warranty
  • Multiple independent audits (Kudelski, Riscure, Cure53) with no critical findings
  • Broad and growing coin/token support with a polished mobile app (buy/sell/swap/stake)
  • Competitive pricing and no KYC required to use the wallet itself

Trade-offs to keep in mind

  • Mobile-only — no desktop app or browser extension
  • No screen: you're trusting your phone's display to show the real transaction
  • Lose every card without a self-configured seed backup and funds are gone forever
  • The 2026 laser PIN-reset flaw can never be patched on existing cards; firmware is permanently locked.
  • December 2024 logging bug exposed some users' private keys via support channels
  • Locked into Tangem's own app for day-to-day use
Tangem makes cold storage unusually easy to start using, but that convenience comes with less independent on-device verification than screen-equipped wallets.
02THE BASICS

What exactly is Tangem?

Tangem is a card-based cold wallet that can be used without a seed phrase by default. The key stays in the secure element and signing happens locally when you tap the card to an NFC-enabled phone. It consists of a set of two or three NFC smart cards, credit-card sized and IP69K-rated, paired with a mobile app. There's no screen, no battery, no USB or Bluetooth. Each card has a secure-element chip that generates the private key on-card the moment you activate it.

The multiple cards themselves are the backup. Users who want a traditional BIP39 seed for cross-wallet compatibility can still set one up, at the cost of reintroducing the exact failure mode Tangem is designed to avoid; because the key is generated on-device rather than derived from a written-down seed phrase, there's no 12/24-word backup by default.

Tangem has shipped over 8 million cards since 2018, giving the design a substantial real-world track record.

03SECURITY

Security & protection model: EAL6+ chip, no screen, and two real incidents

Each card runs a Samsung S3D232A (S3D350 family) secure element, Common Criteria EAL6+ certified — the practical ceiling for this certification class, shared with biometric passports and payment cards. Tangem has commissioned independent security assessments, including work by Kudelski Security and Riscure. We avoid treating the absence of reported critical findings as proof that the design is risk-free.

Backup works differently from most wallets: your 2 or 3 cards share the same keys, and each is an independent full-access backup.

Two incidents are worth knowing about. In December 2024, an app logging issue affected a small subset of seed-phrase users who contacted support. Tangem said it was patched within days, with no confirmed fund loss, although the public disclosure drew criticism. In 2026, Ledger's own research lab publicly disclosed a laser fault-injection attack that can reset a card's access code with physical possession, ~$250K of lab equipment and 1-2+ hours per card. It's a sophisticated theft/'evil maid' scenario, not remote — but because Tangem's firmware is permanently locked by design, this flaw cannot be patched on existing cards.

05THE APP

The app: supported assets & features

The Tangem app is mobile-only (iOS/Android; no native desktop client) and is the primary interface to the wallet. Tangem states that it supports 16,000+ cryptocurrencies and tokens across 95 networks. Check the live supported-assets list before assuming a specific coin or network is available.

Inside the app you can buy, sell and swap through third-party partners, stake selected assets and connect to dApps through WalletConnect. Treat WalletConnect approvals with the same care you would on any self-custody wallet. There's no built-in hardware screen to verify what you're signing, so every transaction detail you see comes from the phone.

[COIN]

16,000+ assets

95 networks claimed, including BTC, ETH/EVM, Solana, TON, Polygon and more.

[SWAP]

Buy / sell / swap

In-app trading via third-party liquidity partners, no separate exchange needed.

[STK]

06HEAD TO HEAD

Tangem vs. Ledger vs. Trezor

Ledger offers a screen-equipped device, USB/Bluetooth connectivity and broad third-party integration via Ledger Live. Its secure-element firmware is closed source, and the optional Ledger Recover service has drawn privacy criticism.

Trezor uses open-source firmware and software and provides on-device transaction verification through a screen. That gives researchers more code transparency than Tangem, at the cost of a more traditional setup flow.

Tangem trades the screen and open-source transparency for radical simplicity: no seed phrase to protect by default, tap-and-go setup, and a slim, portable card. It's a strong pick if ease-of-use and physical durability matter most to you; it's a weaker pick if you want to independently verify what you're signing or prefer auditable, patchable firmware.

07HONEST TAKE

Honest criticism: where Tangem asks you to trust it

No independent transaction verification. Without a screen on the card itself, you're relying entirely on your phone to show you the truth about what you're signing. If your phone is compromised by malware, Tangem's hardware security doesn't help you notice a swapped destination address.

Non-upgradable firmware is a double-edged sword. Tangem argues that eliminating firmware updates removes one remote attack path. But Ledger Donjon's 2026 laser fault-injection finding also means affected cards already in circulation cannot receive a firmware patch; addressing the issue requires a hardware/design change in future cards.

The December 2024 logging issue matters. Tangem said private keys could be written to app logs for a small subset of seed-phrase users and potentially become accessible during support interactions. Tangem fixed the issue and reported no confirmed fund losses, but the incident is still relevant when judging operational security.

Plan the backup set during initial setup. Tangem's backup-card workflow is designed around linking the cards in the set during onboarding, so decide where and how you will store the backups before moving significant funds.

09FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Tangem really seedless — is that safe?

With no seed backup, there is no recovery path at all if every card is lost or destroyed; by default yes: the private key is generated on-card and never exists as a written-down phrase. Safety then depends entirely on not losing all of your cards.

What happens if I lose one card?

Nothing critical — any remaining card from the same set gives full access and can be used to link a new replacement card. Losing every card without a separate seed backup means permanent loss of funds.

Can I still get a normal seed phrase with Tangem?

Yes. Tangem can generate or import a standard BIP39 seed phrase for cross-wallet compatibility or a separate recovery backup. Doing so reintroduces the traditional risk of securely storing a seed phrase offline.

Is the December 2024 issue still a risk?

Tangem patched it within app versions 5.19.1 (iOS) / 5.19.2 (Android) and says logs were deleted; the company states under 0.1% of users were affected and no funds were confirmed lost. Update the app and, if you were on an older version with a seed-phrase wallet, consider moving funds as a precaution.

Can the 2026 laser attack be used against me remotely?

No — it requires physical possession of the card plus roughly $250K in lab equipment (laser, oscilloscope, EM probe) and significant technical skill, taking over an hour per card. It's a targeted physical-theft scenario, not something that can be done over the internet.

Does Tangem work without a smartphone?

No — there is no desktop app or standalone screen. An NFC-enabled phone with the Tangem app is required for every interaction, which is worth knowing if you were expecting a Ledger/Trezor-style standalone device.

Important risk information

  • Self-custody risk: with a hardware wallet, YOU are responsible for your recovery phrase. Lose it (and the device) and funds are permanently, irrecoverably lost — there is no support line that can restore them.
  • Crypto risk: crypto assets involve risk up to total loss. Always do your own research BEFORE buying any hardware wallet or moving funds onto it.
  • Buy only from the official site or an authorized reseller. A hardware wallet bought second-hand, from a marketplace listing, or pre-configured by a seller should be treated as compromised.
  • Never enter your recovery phrase into a website, app, or anyone claiming to be support staff. No legitimate wallet maker will ever ask for it.
  • Physical-possession attacks are real: several wallets, including some covered on this site, have had documented physical tampering or fault-injection flaws (details in each review). No device is unhackable given enough time, money and access to it.
  • Verify current details on the manufacturer's own site before purchasing; firmware/app updates, pricing, specs and supported assets change over time.
